We are God's Canvas

When I begin a painting, I have a canvas, and I bring something from nothing into existence. Isn’t that what God did for each of us?

We all have traits and qualities that are special to us individually. 1 Peter 4:10 states, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."

When I create a painting, each one is unique, even if I have painted it many times before. I select the type of paint, the colors, and the different brushes, and each work of art has its own characteristics.

When I begin painting, I look to art books for guidance, inspiration, tips, and techniques, just as I use the Bible to guide me through life.

As I start a painting, there are endless possibilities of what the canvas will experience. There will be many colors used and different brush strokes. The painting will have layers of paint on top of paint, and it will develop over time as it grows to completion.

I often make mistakes as I paint. As humans, we often fail to do the good things we planned for our lives and the things we should do. Romans 3:23 states, “We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

When painting, I can always wipe my mistakes away or just paint over them, and then it’s like they never happened.

God fixes our mistakes for us. As 1 John 1:9 says, when we go to Him and confess our sin and ask Him to forgive us, He wipes our mistakes away and they are covered up by His blood. God no longer sees our sin.

When the painting is finished, I often step back and admire the good work I have done.

God makes everything, doesn’t He? When He made the universe, the earth, the plants and trees, and the animals, Genesis 1:31 says “God saw all that he had made and it was very good.”

God enjoys his work. He looks at us and admires us as we admire a beautiful work of art. After all, we are His greatest creation.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10
